"Seeing and Savoring"

God’s Rescue Mission.

Christ did not remove Satan and that is just glorious!

This morning, I read chapter nine of John Piper’s book “Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ,” and what a great reminder it was. The chapter speaks to some pressing issues in regards to the church and Her responsibilities here and now. The chapter focuses on the glory of rescuing sinners, rather than removing Satan. Affirming the idea that it is not the mission of the church to remove evil in this world, but to enjoy the incredible privilege and joy of sharing the gospel with others.

Piper points out that Jesus did not come to primarily remove Satan or his power, but to rescue sinners from the power of sin and death. The death of Jesus nullified the damning effect of sin for all who trust in Christ. The weapon of soul-destroying sin and guilt is taken out of Satan’s hand, and he is disarmed of the single weapon that can condemn us- unforgiven sin. This is such an incredible truth to hold onto because it means that, through Christ, we can have the hope of eternal life and the promise of freedom from the guilt and condemnation of sin. As believers, we have the incredible privilege of being part of that rescue mission by sharing the gospel with others and seeing them come to faith in Christ.

This truth is so encouraging because it reminds me that my purpose in this life is not to defeat Satan or to fix all the problems in the world. Instead, my purpose is to share the hope and love of Jesus with those around me, and to see them come to know Him as the Savior of mankind. What a joy and privilege it is to be a part of God’s rescue mission.

Why leave the devils and Satan? Piper points out.

“If Christ were to remove all devils and demons now, His power would be seen as glorious, but His superior beauty and worth would not shine as brightly as when humans renounce the promises of Satan and take pleasure in the greater glory of Christ.”

John Piper

Christ’s sacrifice on the cross is not just about raw power and authority, but also about His immense love and beauty.

As I reflect on the chapter, I am reminded of the words of Paul in 1 Corinthians 1:27-29:

“But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.”

1 Corinthians 1:27-29

Lord, help me to always remember that my strength and power come from you alone, and give me courage and boldness in my mission to joyfully share the gospel with others. Lord, fill my heart with the knowledge that it is through Christ alone that sinners can be rescued and brought safely into your wonderful kingdom!

In Him, with love
