Is Jesus In Your Room? Part 9

“And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

John 3:19-21

As we arrive at part nine of this five-part series, you may be wondering what the point is of all this “Is Jesus in your Room” talk. Well, here it is (although you may need to read parts 1-8 for context):

Why do people reject the message of Jesus? Why don’t they want the lights turned on in their lives? The answer is simple: people love their sin. Sin is delicious, but deadly.

People reject the message of Jesus because having a light shined on who you really are – a sinner in need of a savior – is painful. Unbelievers are not ignorant; they are willfully rejecting Jesus. They are willfully putting their middle finger up at the one and only Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This is because most people do not want to acknowledge who they really are – sinners in need of a Savior.

When the lights turn on in your messy room, you panic! You look around at that hopelessly giant mess and you panic because you know, deep down inside, that you cannot clean it on your own. So what do most people do?

They turn off the lights and continue stumbling in the darkness, just like those who reject the message of salvation. If you are not saved, you are stumbling around in a pitch-dark room and you love it!

But the message of the cross is this: you are a sinner in need of a Savior, and His name is Jesus Christ! There is no other name under the sun by which you may be saved.

“…whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

John 3:21

Believers hate their sin and run to the light! We have nothing to hide. Christ has taken all the shame! Believers have no reason to fear the light. (Eph 2:10; Mark 4:20; Matt 3:8; Rom 8:1)

So I will ask.

Is Jesus in your room? How do you know?

Take a moment to examine your life. Consider the things you do when you think no one is watching. Think about how you behave in different situations. Are you living in a way that honors Christ? Are you living as if He is right beside you, in all aspects of your life? Because no matter the situation, the people around you, or the location, Jesus is always with you if you believe in Him. Even when you think you are alone, you are never truly alone because you are always in His presence. So be mindful of your actions and live in a way that honors Christ, knowing that He is always with you.

How we behave when we think we are alone reveals whether or not we truly believe in Jesus. While the Bible states that everyone who believes will be saved, it also qualifies what belief means. Believers keep the lights on, confronting the mess in their room with the help of Jesus. They submit to Him as Lord of their lives, trusting Him with all their hearts, and with His strength, clean up the messy pigsty of the human heart.

Remember: (Part 3 or 4. I can’t remember which.)

Remember when I mentioned earlier that it seemed like Jesus was setting Nicodemus up to be saved? Well, in John 19, we see Nicodemus, along with a man named Joseph, coming to bury Jesus after He had been crucified for the sins of many.

It seems that Nicodemus must have been saved at this point, as he is demonstrating his allegiance to Jesus in public, at great risk to himself. After Jesus died on the cross, Nicodemus likely remembered the conversation they had in that candle-lit room.

Although the Bible never explicitly states that Nicodemus was saved, we can see his actions and his devotion to the truth. This is evidence that Jesus Christ is the Lord of his life.

In Him, with love
