zechariah

A Blazing Pot.

“On that day the Lord will protect the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the feeblest among them on that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the angel of the Lord, going before them”

Zechariah 12:8

This promise of protection and strength in the face of adversity should inspire and embolden us.

“We have here an express promise that God will be the defender of His church, and will cause it to stand firm against all the assaults of Satan and the whole world.”

John Calvin

“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on Him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over Him, as one weeps over a firstborn.”

Zechariah 12:10

The ultimate sacrifice! Jesus Christ was pierced for our transgression!

“The way that God brings his people to the mourning that leads to salvation is by pouring out a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy. This is not natural to us. It is a work of God.”

John Piper

This redemptive work of salvation is a cause for immense joy and celebration. If you have been saved. You’ve been freed from death! You’ve been given life!

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ-by grace you have been saved.”

Ephesians 2:4-5

We were once imprisoned. We were once held captive by the bonds of sin and death. We were once chained, held firm against the freezing cold stone wall of our own ignorance. Blinded by the dark desires of own self indulgence.

Then from the depths of the deepest darkest dungeon we were saved. And now, because of Jesus, we are no longer doomed to an eternity of grinding teeth. The jubilation that should accompany this freedom should be overwhelming, and is but a taste of the joy that should result from being saved by the grace of God.

Christians! This is where we find our comfort! This is where we find our joy! In the promises of God!

Lord please help me to revel in the joy of this salvation through Jesus Christ!

In Him, with love
